Carton Packing Guidelines

Vendors are required to pack merchandise in cartons that are new, sturdy and can withstand handling and transportation. Shipments received in poor condition may be repacked in new cartons at the Vendor’s expense.  Merchandise should be shipped on pallets or slip sheets unless otherwise requested by Starboard.

  • For all shipments, each carton must contain merchandise for only one Starboard Purchase Order.

  • For Stock merchandise orders to our Distribution Center in Miami, each carton must contain items of only one Starboard ITEM No. (SKU). Packing more than one Starboard ITEM No. per carton, will result in shipment compliance cost recover fees applied to the shipment..

  • For Cross Dock and DSD shipments, more than one ITEM No. (sku) is allowed per carton since quantities per ITEM No. (sku) are small and pre-packed to a specific ship.  All items of each ITEM No. (sku) in the carton should be inner packed and labeled with STB ITEM No. and Quantity per inner pack.

  • Carton label standards exist for both ASN (advanced ship notice) and non-ASN enabled suppliers and must be adhered to.

  • Use new cartons constructed of a minimum 200Lb/sq. in. test corrugate for packaging. The corrugate should be clean. For hardboards, use corrugates of a minimum of 275 Lb/sq. in.

  • Do not use recycled cartons.

  • Gross weight of each carton must not exceed 55 lbs.

  • Use one of the following Preferred Carton Sizes unless found not applicable for selected merchandise.

    • 21"L x 16"W x 12" H

    • 21"L x 16"W x   8"H

    • 21"L x 16"W x   6"H

    • 21"L x   8"W x 12"H

    • 21"L x   8"W x   8"H

  • A carton must not exceed 6 cft. (0.1699 M3 ) in size.

  • A carton must not be smaller than 1 cft. ( 0.0825 M3).

  • All pre-distributed cartons (Cross Dock and DSD shipments) must be marked with the relevant store details that include PO #, cruise line, ship name, ship #, vendor name, ship from, ship to, etc.

  • Do not over pack or under pack the carton.

  • If using shrink-wrap, it must not adversely affect the ability of the scan system to read labels.

  • Seal packing cartons with good quality security tape. The tape should withstand moisture and the adhesive should resist drying out.

  • Place carton inserts above and below merchandise to prevent the contents from knife cuts when opening.

  • Mark cartons containing glass or breakable items with a "fragile" label and "up" arrow.

  • Include certificate that packaging complies with requirements of HazMat goods.

  • All liquid products must have a sealed cap.

  • All Perishable Goods must have Human Readable expiration dates on the export cartons.

  • For folded items and items packed in polybags, place the tag so that the UPC/EAN is visible and accessible to scan without violating item packaging.

  • Shipping floor loaded trucks/containers results in additional cost for manual processing, delays, and potential damages.  Do not ship floor loaded merchandise unless specifically requested by Starboard.

  • Cartons for one Purchase Order must not be mixed among several pallets with cartons from other Purchase Orders.

  • All shipments departing from vendor on August 15th, 2005, or later, must be in compliance with the new USDA Wooden Packaging Material Regulation.  This includes Stock and Cross Dock orders to the Distribution Center, and DSDs from ALL origins, domestic and international.  USDA Wood Packing Material Regulation requires that wooden packing materials such as pallets, crates, boxes, and dunnage be either heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide, in accordance with the IPPC guidelines and marked with an approved international mark certifying treatment.  See Guidelines, Final Rule, and STB Letter documents.

  • Hazardous materials (fragrance, nail polish, etc.) must be properly packaged and designated on the cartons as required by Dangerous Goods regulations.

Apply the carton label to the end side of the case, preferably on the upper right-hand corner. Do not allow the label to cover any other important information.

Use only "smudge-proof " labeling ink and high quality paper.

If marking carton itself, use uniform stencil for all markings.

Highlight short packs.
